Staking Package

A complete set of documents and maps required to file mining claims, including location certificates, corner cards, maps, and BLM filing forms.

Detailed Definition

A staking package is a comprehensive set of documents, maps, and materials prepared for filing one or more mining claims. It includes everything needed for physical staking in the field and recording with the county and BLM.

  • Location certificates: One for each claim, containing all required information
  • Corner cards: Labels or cards to be posted on corner monuments identifying the claim
  • Claim maps: Maps showing claim boundaries, PLSS grid, access routes, and terrain
  • BLM filing forms: Completed forms for recording with the BLM state office
  • County recording forms: Documents formatted for the appropriate county recorder
  • GPS coordinates: Waypoints for each monument location
  • Field instructions: Directions for the staking crew to locate and monument each claim

Staking package preparation: 1. Research land status to confirm the area is open to mineral entry 2. Design claim layout based on target geometry, PLSS grid, and legal requirements 3. Calculate claim corners and monument locations 4. Prepare location certificates with accurate legal descriptions 5. Generate maps and GPS waypoints for field crews 6. Compile filing documents for BLM and county

Automated staking packages: Modern staking packages are increasingly generated using GIS and automation tools, allowing rapid preparation of packages for large claim blocks. ChoraQuest produces automated staking packages that include all required documents and spatial data.

After staking: Once claims are physically staked in the field, the recording portions of the staking package are filed with the county recorder and BLM to perfect the claims.
